Scotsburn Farm, Methven Highway

John and Joyce Stowell own and operate Scotsburn Farm with the help of their son, Thomas. Scotsburn Farm is a 135-hectare BioGro-certified organic crop and sheep farm located just outside Methven, in Mid Canterbury.
In addition to growing crops such as Wheat, Ryecorn, and Spelt, the farm is home to a flock of around 300 pure Wiltshire breeding ewes. These ewes are being selectively bred toward a fully self-shedding flock.
John’s parents originally purchased Scotsburn Farm in 1964 and ran it as a conventional stud sheep and crop farm.
Disillusioned with the general progress of the farm and stud breeding, and concerned by the increasing use of chemicals leading to resistance and weed issues, we began trialling fish and seaweed applications. We felt that moving to organic methods might be more beneficial. After eliminating all chemical sprays and drenches, the farm achieved full organic certification in 2012.
We believe that healthy soil is the foundation of a productive and sustainable farming system. That is why we continually work to improve the biological activity and structure of our soils. Thanks to enhanced soil biology and the vitality of our pastures, our livestock have shown marked improvements in health and resilience. As a result, we have eliminated the need for chemical drenches, vaccinations, and dips. Instead, we rely on natural, preventative approaches to animal health, including homeopathic remedies when needed.
Like many organic farmers, our practices are rooted in stewardship of the land, our animals, and our community. We are proud to produce high-quality, certified organic products that nourish people while caring for the environment. As we look to the future, we continue to explore and adopt organic practices that promote ecological balance, soil vitality, and long-term resilience.
